Odonata Beer Co. and the Saison Ale

Normally, I'm not one to wax philosophical on the qualités of beer. However Odonata Beer, a relatively new company in Sacramento, looks to put the city on the map. Sacramento breweries, while they remain locally celebrated , don't reach outside the city in terms of availability and exposure. I firmly believe that Odonata can make it happen, as the gentlemen behind the company have the tools: experience, connections, and desire. Most importantly their product is tops.

The first word that comes to mind when drinking Odonata's Saison Ale is balance. I won't get into the flavor hints or spice varieties or blah blah that I could pretend to have noticed. So, what did I notice? The color stood even and it wasn't murky, too thick, or too watery. The carbonation was also perfect; no where near flat but not bubbling like champagne. It's citrusy but not stringent, it's drinkable in simple sips and not a gulping drink. The Saison Ale is a drink to be savored, optimal for the summer.

For now Sacramento can count themselves lucky, being the only place in which to enjoy Saison Ale. Yet, with a little luck and plenty of good brews Odonata should be able to reach out of California's Capital.

Monterey Bay Aquarium

The Monterey Bay Aquarium is absolutely amazing. Cristina and I killed 5 hours there, seeing all the exhibits and some special shows. We got our aquatic photo skills on and snapped some real winners. Zissou & Cousteau inspired:

Super Ultimare Hard to Find Rarest of the Rare

In nerd language the term "rare" conjures up many things; and I ain't talkin' steaks. Depending on the level of "rarity" it can lead to nerd jealousy or nerd indifference. A platinum issue of some 90s comic or the first issue of Spawn are not really nerd rarities of the purest sort. While the first appearance of Catwoman (Selina Kyle's first appearance as The Cat in Batman #1 Spring 1940) is a true rare collector's item. Modern day rarities are really manufactured, through limited pressings and hype. Spawn 1 (1992) was onced valued at over $100-$200 depending on the year and a highly graded in perfect condition issue can fetch a pretty penny, still under a $1,000. However one can obtain said issue for less than $20. In 50 years, I don't think Spawn will be anything popular, but Spider-man, Hulk, Batman, etc. will grow in nerd rarity.

Enough about comics, miniatures in the Star Wars realm contain their own rare and very rare products. The rarest of these can be had for under $20. Value is subjective and to the nerdiest completing his/her set or wanting to make their RPG game as "real" or "cool" as possible- must have super rare items.

I imagine that SW miniatures will retain a small value over the years, only because they are Star Wars. However, the RPG SW audience is small in comparison to comic or antique collectors. There's no denying it though, the Rancor is an awesome figure and it's super-duper rarity makes it even cooler!

The Office Baby

Has NBC's "The Office" jumped the shark? Viewers seem to feel that the story lines are off base and wild. However, I disagree. I think the story lines are similar to what they've always been and the characters really haven't changed (with the exception of Jim and Pam). I believe the novelty of the show is wearing off. It's the same awkward situations, goofy jokes, and unreasonable behavior that The Office has always exhibited. It seems to me that you could take any episode from this season and put it into any of the first few seasons (continuity aside) and it would be just as funny as many episodes of yore.

Unfortunately, Jim and Pam have become boring. Cristina noticed it far sooner than I. They aren't as funny or captivating as they once were. It seems that the marriage and baby saga aren't enough to carry them. Simply, they aren't very funny and turn their scenes into a snooze-fest. Michael Scott, is effectively the same character he's always been; and Dwight Schrute is in the same boat as Michael. Yet Michael and Dwight's gimmicks are tiring. During this last episode Michael acts like a dork during the pregnancy and parks Jim's car in an ambulance only zone. Nothing unusual and not exciting or new. Dwight smashes up Jim and Pam's house, fighting their black mold, only to install new cabinetry: clever but not hilarious.

The Andy and new secretary tales prove annoying. I don't think viewers feel the same pull for them as they did with Jim and Pam. Andy and the new secretary are caricatures, we laugh at them not with them. What the show needs more of is Creed. He is old, maniacal, and non sequitur- in short, humorous. Ryan on the other hand is plain awful. Ryan's lines are dry, his teaming up with Dwight was contrived, and his clothing is the only thing jumping sharks.

So what can make the show better? When I think of long lasting TV comedies I think of Mash and Seinfeld. The Office is no Mash. Seinfeld is the great comedy from which to learn. It involved eccentric and normal people doing different things and meeting different people. It was their goofy interactions with a normal outside world that kept it going. Seinfeld jumped the shark when the cast was arrested, but that was the final episode- a perfect coup d'état. The office in which they work is the one place that is stale and subjects viewers to the same type of jokes and routines. Think about when Jim and Pam visited Shrute Farms, when Michael held the rabies race for a cure, when Andy, Michael, and Oscar went to Canada, or when Michael drove his car into the lake whilst following the GPS. Funny, funny, and funny. Otherwise they can deliver a series finale that leaves them all in dire straits (maybe Dwight snaps and goes postal or they are sued because Michael does something irredeemably outrageous).

This past episode shortly involved a hospital and Jim and Pam's house. Boring places that added little depth to the comedic routines. Although I did find the baby mix-up scene a knee slapper. Lastly, what irritates me the most is that The Office one hour "special" removed 30 Rock from this week's line-up. Homie don't play 'dat, 30 Rock is the funniest show on television right now (excluding Mash reruns).

Catching Up

The concept of time is one we understand but never control. So it goes for yours truly. With the lack of time comes the inability to fit it all in, in particular- films. And to be more particular- super hero films. That's right finding the time to watch the glory of Super Heroes in cartoon and live action form can prove troublesome when the clock isn't going your way. However, I have found an imbalance in the force that is allowing me to watch a surplus of action packed adventures whilst rolling on my bike indoors. In short, I've enjoyed the likes of Hulk (TV show from the 70s), Planet Hulk, and Superman Batman: Public Enemies.

I will spare the details of Hulk (starring Bill Bixby), as it needs no introduction, but will entice you with the fantastic cartoons. Planet Hulk and Superman Batman: Public Enemies are 4 star comic adventure cartoons. Highly action packed these movies delivered characters we all know and love at the top of their game. The story lines are neat and the developments prove fun. If you have Netflix, add it to the queue and be prepared for some awesomeness that is Hulk smashing and Batman/Superman delivering cans of whoop ass across the DC Universe.

The movies had their lackluster moments though. Planet Hulk dragged in some parts and the story line had some minor annoyances, nothing of which to worry. Superman Batman : Public Enemies suffers from animeish art that makes Clark and Bruce look one in the same, in regards to physique and square jaw-ness (again not that big of a deal).

If this doesn't get you in the mood for the Superman Batman movie, nothing will- complete with Gil Kane punching-esque punches!

And ofcourse, Planettttt HUUUUUUUUULLLLKKKKK!

San Francisco Beer Week Highlights

San Francisco Beer Week manages to stretch itself into two weeks to a month; however I was there for a few days with my buddy Chris. For your viewing pleasure I offer several take-aways from the expedition.

Good/Great

Food carts in Dolores Parks, especially Magic Curry Kart (Twitter: @magiccurrykart) and a grilled cheese cart, that pleased me so much I didn't even catch the name.
Beer ice-cream or any ice-cream at Humphry Slocomb. They played The Misfits' Static Age whilst I dined on superb Winter Ale creamy goodness, multiple thumbs up.
Rosamunde Sausage Grill - vegan sausages with toppings galore, tasty beers on tap too.
Church Key - last time I went there it was loud, annoying, and had a lame bartender; this time it was low-key, had a good bartender, and was enjoyable. Worth ducking into if it isn't blaring music and isn't crowded.
Golden Boy Pizza - My favorite place in the world to have stellar pizza and beer at an extremely low price. GB caps off any night in spades.

Bad/Ugly

Sushi & beer pairing at some place not worth naming. Food proved lackluster, closer to Southern fried comfort food than traditional Japanese. Pairings made no sense and all courses and beers were on the table together... awful.
"Book of Eli" - this movie blew chunks. D+
Some guy who played pool like he was in Street Fighter. Seriously, it was Super Bowl Sunday and we're in a bar, he's wearing sports clothing sipping on ice water while doing pirouettes and jump kicks after taking a shot. It was weird and embarrassing.

Other things escape my mind, however most negatives of the trip had positives (minus the aforementioned). All in all it was a busy and laughter filled journey, but now it's time for constant cycling training and minimal beer (gasp)... until next year.

Comic pad

I can't say I'm all that impressed by the ipad. It doesn't do much of anything new, revolutionary, or easier. If I didn't already have a laptop and a smartphone it might be worth looking into. However, it's implications in the realm of comic book enjoyment could prove life changing. While having multiple comic boxes worth of reads in the storage of one easy to use device is enticing; it doesn't justify the price tag. To be honest, I would use the ipad for other things but it's main pull is it's comic friendliness. As next generation tablets appear and competitors take shape the price will drop and a universe of comics could easily be in my grasp! Or I could just move back home and read the universe of comics my dad has collected for over 50 years. Until I either of those take shape I'll stick with my limited monthly reads, trade-paper backs, and eye-straining pdfs.

2009 just so happens to be the year of the Beatle. The Beatles mono releases took albums that couldn't be better and made them better. It took familiar tracks and added layers that went unheard/unfelt. Moreover, exploding auditory experiences wasn’t enough; Apple also released Beatles Rock Band. And hands down this is video game of the year. The beautiful visuals, simple, fun, and clean story mode, and the instrument handling do justice to The Beatles' catalogue. While I love my video games that provide revolutionary gaming graphics, insane tales, running through hell-fire and brimstone, evolving a character, realistic burps, etc.- eventually I will stop playing those games, waiting for a new version to come out. Not so for Beatles Rock Band.

Music 2009 also leaves much to be desired. As of late, I haven’t been on the pulse of music. And there have been tons of 09 releases, to name a few: Tortoise, Kings of Convenience, Wolfgang Phoenix, Flaming Lips, Japandroids, Grizzly Bear, Coconut Records, Harlem Shakes, and Owen put out albums. So who stands on top? The cop out answer is The Beatles mono-masters. The real answer though is no one. Not one album stands out as the most amazing piece of 2009. Perhaps I’m missing something and a friend can point me in a better direction. I was digging Kings of Convenience a few weeks back but it isn’t the best of 2009. This year remains largely uninspired and I would show gaping bias to mark Owen as the best of 2009 (although it is). As it stands, I’d rather listen to "The Ricky Gervais Guide To…" series.

2009 was sort of a lackluster year more transitory than staple inducing. Sure it had its highlights but I think like most Americans, I believe 2010 will be better. At least I’ll be riding my bike a whole lot more.

I'm normally not one to wax massive on daily activities but a relaxing few days has inspired a more wordy post than usual. This weekend I combatted a minor cold and could only fit in an hour or so on the bike. However, it was a tremendous weekend for food, video games, and rocking out to The Beatles. It all began with a rousing game of zombie massacring with my buddy Gabe. Left 4 Dead 2 ups the ante with better levels, added destructive melee weapons (see chainsaw, machetes, and frying pans), improved artificial intelligence, and more skull crushing good times.

Then Cristina and I played so much Beatles Rock Band we could have started calling each other Ringo and George. We essentially played through the entire game in 2 days- it's that good. We grew up on The Beatles, it definitely shows when we're playing, nerdy but fun as hell. Later, we had some pretty good pizza, beer, wine, espresso, etc. at a joint called Onespeed. Their decor is cycling inspired and if you're in Sacramento it's worth checking out.

I also squeezed in some time with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. The multiplayer on this game is so badass I won't be messing with the solo-campaign for awhile. It's the same routine of running around and exploding/blasting players up or sneaking up on them and giving them the ol' what-for, despite the repetition it's endless enjoyment. On the flip side of this game is Beatles Rock Band. The Apple marketing engine is brilliant and constantly gobbles up money in the most worthy ways (see mono-remixes). The Beatles, without a doubt, deserved their own title to make the Rock Band paradigm work. The sheer number of songs/albums, quality of tracks, and history demands it's own setup and experience.

I'm no musician but the rock band titles allow you to enjoy music in new and fun ways; just like I'm no super-soldier but launching video-game grenades satisfies the kid in me (but I am a zombie-slayer). So yah, even in sickness, the weekend was fantastic.

A Boy and His Bike

My first bike was a blue BMX equipped with training wheels. As soon as I got those trainers off I broke out of our cul-de-sac and into the wild desert, traversing onto large hills and racing down them as fast as possible. Like many kids I had a deep desire for speed, quickness, and the unknown; and the vehicle that could deliver it all was the bicycle. It was the greatest rush a 5 year old me had ever tapped into. Oh, how little things change.

I picked up a Cannondale CAAD9 5 from my local bike shop, Mike's Bikes in Sacramento. Their service was top-notch and I didn't feel alienated because this was my first "real" road-bike. I had my heart set on the CAAD but just to compare, I test rode a Specialized Tarmac (impressive bike) but the bike guys even agreed that the CAAD was a better deal- the aluminum frame is second to none. This was also my first proper bike fit and it made all the difference. On this beast, I feel like I can ride over 10 hours no problems and in comfort (maybe I'll test that theory next spring).

This is a frame any cyclist can pick up and improve with little hassle; and plenty of people race on these frames, road and cyclocross. It's equipped with Shimano 105s (perfect for the apprentice me) and I added Shimano Ultegra pedals. There's really no nice comparison with the ol' 1983 Peugeot and a 2010 bike. The CAAD handles amazingly well, holds true/stiff, and is incredibly light. In short, it's swift and smooth. This bike has a lot to offer and I have plenty to learn and much like the blue BMX, I will grow with it.

Requiem for a Peugeot

My bike sits against the wall lifeless without a functioning derailleur. The sun rises early but I can't greet it in the way I want. I run yet the desire to crush scores of miles remains unfulfilled. Scouring the depths of the web and bike junkyards yields only sore eyes and greasy hands, respectively. It's time to move past the old frame, old wheels, old gears, and worn out everything. I've been hindered repeatedly in continual ways, from slipping gears, damaged brakes, bent chains, and now complete dysfunction.

It's only a matter of moments before you hurt me: rattling and crashing during a steep drop, sliding and crashing on a simple turn, or not able to brake leading to an unknown mess. Perhaps you will be resurrected for commutes, a river-ride, or a happy-hour; but for now, old friend, sleep and rest- you've earned it.

Journey of the Century Dérailled

I didn't want to end 2009 without completing my first 100 mile bike ride. With the arrival of fall, rain, wind, and cold weather the window to tackle the endeavor was closing. This past Saturday, Nov. 7th, it was an all or nothing ride. A ride that took me over unfamiliar road, endless farmland, and daunting hills. The morning began early and I loaded up on a nutritious breakfast and an espresso (in hindsight I should have had a double). Overall I felt good, the bike was tuned, the road food stored, and an extra bag of supplies ready for pick-up. I was fortunate to have Cristina acting as Directeur Sportif, providing necessary nourishment and water after I hit the 50-60 mile mark.

The scenery surrounding the small country roads outside of Davis, CA are simply stunning. It's a view that keeps you going. The rolling landscape is dream-like and feels endless. It's something you don't see when you drive over freeways and major highways. It provides for a grand bike ride until you hit suburbia. I was able to handle rolling hills and natural grades; then I rolled through a small suburban community and met hills of the likes I had never tackled. They weren't major but after going 50-60 miles they took a toll on me. The toll it exacted made the return trip feel worse but invigorating. When going over some of those hills I felt pain in my legs such as I had never felt. Yet, it fueled me to continue and fight it out.

I was lucky that day for several reasons. The weather was perfect in that I never had to remove my top layer merino sweater over a short-sleeve merino jersey. The air proved crisp enough to cool me down but not enough to have me shivering or feeling cold and the wind was mild. A small seat adjustment fit me into the saddle better than ever and Cristina's support made the trip easier. Then I got unlucky. I reached Davis, the final destination that got me into striking 100 miles. And then it happened...my bike would not stay in gear. The chain was jumping up a gear then down and around. I hopped off only to notice a damaged cage.

This would have really sucked 25 miles prior or even 10. I finished the ride and have learned several valuable lessons (other than carry a spare derailleur ha.ha.):

know where your water refill and restroom stations will be
pack plenty of water packets (I used propel and it worked out well)
eat, eat, and eat

Biking this distance was tremendously enjoyable and didn't leave me hurt or exhausted the next day. However, it does leave me wanting a more reliable bike (my Peugeot is older than I). It has also left me wanting more: more bike rides, longer distances, faster speeds, improved pacing, etc. etc. My 2009 cycling goal is complete and the winter season will leave me with strength conditioning, indoor cycling fun, and chilly weekend rides.

Sunken Ships

Daylight savings hath arrived and it doth provide morning shine.

I'm not much of a fan of getting up early to go for a run, head to the gym, or entertain an exercise routine. However, it has become enjoyable and easier to wake up when heading out for a bike ride. It's sort of like the first day of school or Christmas, but probably more like Saturday morning cartoons; I can't wait to get up, down an espresso, get the gear on, and carry my bike down the stairs. In short, it's fun.

Sacramento is blessed with many biker friendly streets and several bike trails. As of late I have been journeying south, after trekking the Davis and American River trail routes numerous times. Sometimes I see an odd bum peering through bushes, deer munching on foliage, squirrels jetting for dear life, etc. But on the journey south I found a washed up paddle-boat along the river banks. It's novel just to see it resting there, reminding me that biking on a river trail beats the hell out of weaving through traffic and swearing at cars that cut in front of you. The river appears motionless, a once powerful ship sits dead, and the only thing moving with great speed is you.

Warmer Climes Kill

Sacramento's mid 60s to mid 70s weather filled with sunshine and light breezes are effectively making me semi-insane. It's perfect weather for a long bike ride, a light cruise to the park for a picnic, and/or sitting on the balcony enjoying some cold cold ones. Unfortunately, I'm stuck. Stuck in a building with regulated temperatures and pumped in air. A building that offers large windows displaying an unusually gorgeous November day; and what will probably be a gorgeous week. In short, the 9-5 has me in a strait-jacket.

Once I'm off work the sun is setting and outdoor fun is no longer within grasp. I have an hour for lunch that will allow me to take a brisk bike ride to the river and take in the invigorating atmosphere, but that's a tease. Luckily daylight savings is in effect and I can knock out a quick morning ride as the sun slowly takes shape around 6:AM or so, a longer tease but a tease nonetheless.

Winter is right around the corner and thoroughly enjoying what's left of the Indian Summer feels unattainable.

A Windy & Sunless Fall : Gear Reviewed

I've been complaining, more often than not, about the lack of sun during this time of year: it prevents before and/or after-work rides. Cycling lights don't cut it and Sacramento lacks regular street lighting, added to the dilemma is a surplus of trees that blot out the moon and stars. Today I had enough and set out at 5:30 AM. I chose the day that proved the coldest and windiest it has been in weeks; a day which ended summer weather and rolled in fall. I also learned that it is truly darkest before the dawn. Despite the atmosphere that surrounded the ride I was prepared. Two layers of merino wool, killer Hincapie socks, and Pearl Izumi thermafleece bib ensured cold and wind were kept at bay.

The first layer of merino I was lucky to have owned for ages. It was a lightweight long-sleeve zip up sweater from the gap. I know, not exactly premium made for cycling gear but this thing really worked. The ol' gap sweater was well worn in and flexible. I had it over a swobo merino jersey. The swobo jersey needs to be broken in and proved, initially, a bit itchy. Once I was on the road I didn't notice it at all and was plenty warm. All the hype surrounding merino is hardly hype.

The Izumi bib was great and my lower half was never a concern, neither too warm nor too cool. The chamois wasn't overly bulky or thin, in short it complimented my saddle (albeit an old saddle). Anxious to test out the gear further I went for two rides today and was comfortable both early early morning and early evening.

And my ride.

I've owned this '83 Peugeot for a couple of years. It is mostly stock, minus the Shimano handlebars, SRAM chain, and of course the handlebar tape. It must have been housed for most of it's life as the rims, tires, chainsets, and crank are original. The original chain only met it's maker just a few weeks ago. The water-bottle comes from non-other than one of the most amazing cycling performance-wear companies Rapha. The water-bottle actually belongs to Cristina but she's gone for the week and I'll be damned if I give my girlfriend a lemon for a water-bottle; thus obligating my testing it out in the rigors of fall cycling.

Having established that an old merino sweater works incredibly well I am happy to not have to retire my Rapha jersey for the cold months. Worrying about your gear, to be blunt, sucks- and Rapha ensures not only that you will be comfortable and traveling with less worry but you'll be looking slick as well. With any luck I'll pick up some Rapha merino base-layers and remain comfortable and warm as the temperatures continue to drop.

Better Than The Beatles

Last night was an awakening. It was one of those moments when you think you know something, I mean honestly get it and live by it. And then something happens and bam, your life is changed for better or worse. The moment at hand is tied to the remastered collection of The Beatles. I grew up on The Beatles, like most people that can be trusted. I listened to the vinyls, cassettes, CDs, and even took a college course focused solely on them.

The conflict and history of mono and stereo gets a bit convoluted. All you really need to know is that The Beatles recorded most of their albums in mono and paid no attention to the stereo mixing. It was new, unrefined, and gimmicky technology; their musical vision was in mono. Last night, Cristina and I listened to Revolver in remastered mono. The comparison to the CD/mp3 versions is something you have to experience. Vocals, bass, piano, guitar, drums, etc. etc. are full and warm. The sounds capture real life better than ever before. You hear/feel instruments and sounds that were never accessible before. The same holds true for vinyl record holders of these albums, the mono will sound better than the stereo. The fun isn't over. There are more albums to enjoy and the stereo remastering of all their albums aims to beat out the old mono versions. Thanks to modern audio technology the stereo versions should deliver an even better sound. I'm skeptical because the mono remasters blew my head off my shoulders. I'll run another comparison and report back. Until then, do yourself a favor and get your hands on these remastered collections.

I was recently asked about the 2004 World Series Championship, knowing now that Manny and Papi are known performance drug-users, before and maybe after that season. My questioner called it a tainted year. My response:

If you take the few players who have tainted the game and dwell on their actions, applying it to every game and the whole season/post-season then all is tainted. I prefer to look at the players individually. Bonds' record is a sham, but his team did get to the world series and played hard, and lost thankfully. Manny and Papi, while I love'em, are dirty players. Manny for sure, but Papi still has to release a statement that might cover him, but probably not.

If I took down a whole team because of the actions of a few then I might as well give up MLB, NFL, TdF, etc. etc. That's me though, anti-sox will jump for joy and take down the whole banner despite the honest and hardworking players, staff, management, and fans that went into that 2004 season.

That's how I feel and I'm sticking to it. If it comes out that a great cyclist was doping, I blame that person not the entire team and their success.

Tour de France

Cristina and I have been watching The Tour de France all month. We started off watching the late night repeats, however as the race comes closer to an end I've found myself waking up early everyday to catch the final hour. I'll admit that right off the cuff cycling may not be the most exciting event if you're unfamiliar with it. While there are the obvious technical aspects and grueling passion of combat with cycling, The Tour de France is also a thing of beauty. The scenery in which they travel and the colors of the flying team jerseys and bikes make for constant awe inspiration. There's also plenty of drama between riders and teams.

This weekend will prove to be the most exciting, as it is the final two days of racing. If you have the chance I highly recommend watching this weekend's events- schedule here. And how often do you see a champion like Lance Armstrong make a comeback of this magnitude in any sport?!

This passing week has been a momentous one for movies. I've watched a handful of Woody Allen films and Manhattan is one that stands out as particularly smart, witty, wholesome, and worth your time. It's done up in black and white (an easy way to win my approval) and full of quick-dialogue (another way to gain my heart). It is Allen at his best.

In the Mood for Love is another Wong Kar-wai joint and it delivers to the umpteenth level. It's full of awkward tension and raw emotion in the face of a modernized/globalized China. A definite must rent; and the soundtrack is tops.

Lastly, was Le Samourai. I got into this movie all kinds of quick, as it's full of action, intellectual detective work, stoic-strength, and a French police force that isn't afraid to abuse personal privacy to solve a crime. The ending certainly left me thinking, and as I ponder it more and more I find myself liking it more and more.

Due up this week: Match Point and Lady Vengeance. Yep more Woody Allen and a taste of the orient, by Chan Wook Park (of Oldboy fame).

For some reason or another (BSG) my dedication to watching an amazing amount of movies has diminished. While in Grad School, living in the snow and negative temperatures of Syracuse, Cristina and I watched tons of baseball and movies. Last week Cristina and I watched Annie Hall for the first time. It lives up to all the grandeur that it has been given and was certainly more than we expected. The brief Christopher Walken moment was something we didn't anticipate but totally loved.

This weekend I watched Planet of the Apes (again) and Chungking Express. Two movies that are unlike each other in every way, yet they both have pushed me back to a desire to watch more films. They have enhanced my craving for the Planet of the Apes sequels and other movies by Wong Kar-Wai.

Hope to add additional titles, maybe more obscure, in the weeks to come; there you have it must see movie rentals, even if it's for the umpteenth time:

Amazing Spider-Man

Spider-Man was one of the first super-heroes to enter my world of fiction and fantasy. My father collected comic-books and the web-head was a strong staple of that collection. As such, I've had comic action figures since I was born and a plastic Spider-Man with limited points of articulation graced my room. In elementary school I read classic reprints of the original volumes written by Stan Lee. As a kid, I made it a point to give gifts of Spidey Super Stories (as my dad had multiple copies), to others for birthday gifts. I think those comics were largely sponsored by Hostess Cupcakes or something.

Amazing Spider-Man happens to be my go to comic when I'm in the middle of a 2 for 1 deal and I need a freebie. Some of the story lines have been lame, see clones, while others triumphs, see Straczynski. However, as of many years ago, I no longer pick it up on a monthly basis. This changes again, I'll be picking it up regularly as the last issue I read proved interesting and captures the oddity of Peter Parker's superhuman life. I guess Spider-Man has been gone for some months, being trapped in an alternate dimension with the Fantastic Four, and finds that J. Jonah Jameson is mayor of New York and mounting a battle for a Spider-Man free city. Peter Parker also manages to walk in on Aunt May, whilst she is under the covers with none other than, Spider-Man supporter, John Jonah Jameson Sr. Iegads!

For a couple weeks now I've stayed away from Twitter, Myspace, and Facebook. I've had my fill of them and found them to be time-wasters that didn't necessarily enhance my communication with friends and family. Myspace and Facebook alike allow people I haven't talked to in years to find me and then we catch up with a 'how do you do' then nothing. It's seems rather impersonal and repetitious. However, the facebook chat, which is nothing more than an instant messenger is handy. I was able to catch-up with friends immediately and have an actual conversation. There are options to have the chat in a stand alone application, maybe I'll look into that.

I've saved a lot of time and have been able to use my work breaks to step away from the computer screen instead of checking updates taking place on the social web. That was one problem with twitter. You're waiting for the next sentence. Yet, many people don't blog, or blog that often, so Twitter is something that I may have to get back to, to stay in the loop with friends; where one sentence is really all any of us need. I missed some news by not being on Twitter and I am reconsidering jumping back on but limiting my time on it.

So what have I been able to do with all this great time I've saved? I've read a lot of comics, started watching Woody Allen films, watched plenty of baseball and Battlestar, enjoyed neighborhood jogs, have been caught up on my RSS feeds, etc. whilst being less attached to a my computer and cell phone. Social networks were go-to places while on the computer but now I stick with blogs and news sites. In the end it's boils down to time management and social networks were wasting my time.

I learned long ago not to judge a comic book by it's cover. Usually it's something outrageous: the hero or heroine on the cover in a precarious and impossible situation, finding out they have an illegitimate child, losing their powers forever, their identity has been revealed, and/or wrestling a reptile-alien of godlike proportions. All of which never take place in the comic in any way shape or form. It's like they have the artist draw the coolest most enticing cover ever only to reveal nothing of the sort on the pages within. The Mighty isn't exactly on par with that discovery but if you look at this cover (above) it looks quite ominous and you would think the pages within are going to contain some major action.

Nope, not at all. For some reason this comic was added to my monthly comic pick-ups; I may have added it because some reviewer on the inter-webs said it was good. It's a comic that is trying to do a lot but it's still dull. It tries to be funny but it's forced. It wishes it was new and cutting-edge but it's recycled. I read 3 issues and wanted to get the 4th, maybe it would grow on me or something would happen that would improve it. However, I gave up on that, why should someone have to get 4 issues of a comic to find out if it's any good. By that time I am out over $10. So yah, I'm done with this comic book.

On the flip side, Walking Dead is a comic book which proves it's value and I've only read one issue! It's about a zombie filled world where the characters- adults and kids- have depth and are interesting. I actually care about their struggle against the zombies, some of which are their friends and family (as one can expect). This lead me to pick up about 5 or so back issues and request vol. 1 of the trade paper back from the local library. However, I might just buy the tpbs anyway because it IS that good.

United Kingdom Music Presents

Sacramento doesn't happen to get all that many shows that I find myself interested in checking out. However, last night, I was fortunate enough to catch 2 bands: Los Campesinos! and Sky Larkin. My predilection for Los Campesinos! developed sometime ago but I had never heard Sky Larkin. Both bands are from the U.K., have an approvable rough around the edges sound, and have been on what seem to be extensive tours. They've been constantly touring around the USA (and I imagine the world) but were still able to bring massive energy and rock to Sacramento.

Their music isn't for everyone but I dig'em. Sky Larkin reminds me of a Rainer Maria with a bit more pop. Additionally, I've been reading more about improving one's music experience and may find myself investing heavily into a new record player, speakers, integrated amp, more vinyl records, etc. More on that should it come to fruition.

Wathchmen the flimsy film

Again, I will not jump into the fray by expounding on the instant classic Watchmen movie. However, I will quote others that capture my sentiment and point you towards their quality reviews:

"But it [Watchment] is certainly not the graphic novel, not even what you could honestly think of as an adaptation of it. It's a completely new, post-"Mystery Men" cheesy, faux-grand superhero epic without any kind of humanity to it. It's all artifice. I really do think it's a terrible movie, with moments that made me cringe for aesthetic reasons, but I'm kind of fascinated by it and maybe that's why I get some perverse enjoyment out of it. I certainly wouldn't recommend the movie to anyone..."

What I'm Reading / Have Read

As usual I'm knee deep in some fine comic literature. I picked up vol. 1 of J. Michael Straczynski's Thor and Amazing Spider-man Happy Birthday. Sure to be greats, by a most enjoyable author. I also started Nevermore, a graphic novel that tells Poe's stories in a new and enticing way. I could see this as being useful for getting school kids into classic English literature but so far I'm not Impressed.

Last week I finished up Honoré de Balzac's The Wild Ass's Skin. Not his greatest work, yet his story telling, description, and ability to take you through Parisian/European history, customs, classes, etc. remains undisturbed. This is more of a fantastical tale, (using the term lightly) in comparison to his other works, and the story has a certain je ne sais quoi. As always, I find his novels and short stories most rewarding.

Now, I'm rereading J.D. Salinger's Nine Stories. As I get older and with each reread his works get better. Before, some stories I found less fascinating and less worthwhile than others; now I get into each one and am able to pick apart pieces I didn't care to register before. Salinger's artistry is apparent, the amount of substance he can fit into a handful of pages makes him a quintessential writer of 1940s America.

And in case you were saying, I don't care what you're reading, what are you eating? I ate a burrito from Senor Burrito on I and 7th. That burrito cart is tops!

Kevin Smith : Batman Cacophony

I just finished reading Kevin Smith's 3 part mini-series Batman Cacophony and honestly, I've thoroughly enjoyed his prior comic work: all the Jersey comics Bluntman & Chronic, Chasing Amy, etc. (aside: any blog post where I use "Bluntman" is a winner), Green Arrow, Daredevil, and Spider-man miniseries. I even put up with the erratic and lengthy nature of his comic releases and follow-ups. His work has always been pleasing and something I look forward to. However, this latest disappoints- the banter is overworked and he's working with characters that require more complexity than he can provide.

While his Joker is reminiscent of the Batman character that was on Fox TV, the jokes fall flat and lacks wit. Joker's dialogue ( and all the dialogue really) does little for the story's development and my interest in it. He also attempts to shed greater light on the Batman-Joker relationship. An attempt that manages to read like a second rate copy of Alan Moore's Killing Joke, a story that successfully highlighted and deepens a relationship's inevitable 'bang'.

This brings me to the super-villain Onomatopoeia (see what I did there?), originally introduced in Smith's Green Arrow run. An enjoyable character, that could be done well in an exclusive miniseries. Smith works best with what he knows, and he knows this character. Sure we all know Batman and the Joker, but writing and recreating a story about them is like trying to reinterpret Jesus and The Apostles- many try but few succeed. I'll still pick up any future Smith funny books. Just the same though, the feeling of being ripped off hasn't faded and I definitely want my nine bucks back.

As of late I have been thoroughly enjoying Maps & Atlases (home page). Cristina introduced me to one of their tunes and I recently picked up their full length - Tree, Swallows, Houses. She knew I would dig them and couldn't have been more right. They are in the same vein as Sharks Keep Moving and Minus the Bear, making them an automatic winner in my book. Tom Lynch of newcitychicago.com had this to say:

"The first word that comes to mind when attempting to describe local band Maps & Atlases: complicated. Spastic rhythms and anti-rhythms assault with both a math-rock and lo-fi pop foundation, while the vocals--with lyrics apparently jammed together, seemingly in an Exquisite Corpse method (which only adds to the aural confusion)--surf a giant wave of pin-prick guitar lines and slaughterhouse drums. Marvel 1984

Last night, Cristina was reading Watchmen while I read the comic series by Mark Millar Marvel 1984. The comparison between the series I was reading and the series she was reading is large. Everyone knows that Watchmen is a serious effort to deliver a thinking person's comic. Marvel 1984 while entertaining, was one of the nerdiest story lines I've ever read. While the superheroes are really side-characters to the "real" humans of our universe, it manages to make comic book readers look like huge dorks who constantly fantasize about possible realities in which our fantastic comic characters journey to our earth! It made me think that comic book enthusiasts are barely fit to exist on this earth as they live in ivory towers caring only about themselves and their funny books. We aren't a species grounded in reality.

I liked this series and it put a different twist on merging our world with the Marvel universe and it works as a six shot miniseries. Yet, in the end though it made me feel like a massive nerd (which I am) but also glad that I'm not up to par in geekdom as the characters in Millar's work.

Comic Gimmickery

In case you didn't know : the DC universe "killed" Batman. I read an issue of Batman and didn't bother with the Final Crisis story. All in all it makes me think, "yawn, boorring". This is a gimmick. And not a very good one at that. When Marvel peaced out Captain America that made people think and it actually got people into comics. The Batman being dead ordeal is annoying, you can write his death but you can't really kill the guy- he's a legend. DC "killed" Superman and that goofy storyline captures the horror that was 90s comic writing. Understanding how Batman died and cycling through crossovers beckons back to the 90s. Killing a timeless superhero is a last ditch effort.

While DC and Marvel both issued gimmicks this month, when it comes to comic gimmickery, Marvel wins by putting Obama on the cover of Amazing Spider-man. It was something that actually brought people to comic stores and had them lining up.

Motivation has been lacking in some areas and I haven't got around to the great many things I would like to do. While I've been able to turn up my music listening, reading, television program enjoying, and look to begin a gym routine; I've let down my comic writing, movie watching, and apartment organization. I look towards February to repair that which falters, however tonight I expect to try something new.

Microsoft has offered a beta version of Windows 7 and I'll throw a partition on the trusty Macbook and see how it drives. My buddy, Neverbesocial, is probably saying WTH for? I used to have Windows XP and used it when the rare instance of needing an odd program (metadata software) that wasn't done well enough on Mac. That and Ultimate Baseball, the online baseball game, was PC only. Plus I like to compare video playback on the two OSes. However, I'm not to sure what I'll do with Windows 7. I'm done with metadata (for now), the baseball game, and video is stellar on my Mac. The sake of trying something new and exploring Microsoft's attempt to overcome Vista woes.

It's a beta and will expire in August- so I'll have fun with it and see if there are big deal OS features. I DOUBT that I will ever buy it or use it for reals. I imagine. Mac will release a real OS update within a year, not including "snow" leopard. I'll give it whirl and will let you know if it sticks out as a worthy OS and XP replacement.

THX 1138

George Lucas' debut feature film is a work everyone should watch, especially if you're into Star Wars.I watched the updated edition with added CGI scenes, and those scenes were wholly unnecessary: futuristic cars zooming around, hairy monkey beasts, a scorpion, etc. Yet, the movie's themes and motifs stand on their own. Also, Robert Duvall does a great job portraying THX 1138, a clone who cuts down on his sedation drugs and begins to feel emotion and rebel against the status-quo. What ensues is a mind-boggling journey into a dystopian future.

It reminds me of Brave New World or Kurt Vonnegut's Player Piano. The way it is filmed feels like a Kubrick movie, namely 2001: A Space Odyssey, amazing shots of technology and mankind's interaction with it. The movie takes place in a sterile world where human goals are to build machines- machines that police mankind and dictate their growth, progress, and movement. People are inebriated with sedatives, religion, holograms (SWHS, anyone?), toil, and appeasing the system.

I've gained incite into Lucas' younger days and his molding of future films. If he had stuck with this deep and cynical viewpoint who knows what he could have done. Not that Star Wars and Indiana Jones aren't fantastic movies; but imagine if they were combined with serious sensory explosions and serious qualitative drama (admit it: Lucas bought the farm, jumped the shark, sold out, etc. Maybe not in one sitting but there's a progression that begins with SWHS and ends with Indialiena). Not to spoil anything further, I thoroughly enjoyed THX 1138 and give it an A-

2008 and Back

2008 has largely been a time of transition: finishing graduate school, successfully finding and loving my new librarian job, moving to Sacramento, and being the scourge of librarian conferences (and multiple beer festivals) in Portland and Seattle. 2009 looks to be a great settling in period and becoming a contributing citizen, rather than a vagrant sucking life force from all passer-bys.

2008 also has a best of list composed by yours truly! Who'd have thunk it? Cristina can fill in any details I leave out or call out the lies I leave in, as she has access to my brainwaves at all times. If I didn't include something just ask and I'll mull it over.

There is nothing like Internets at the airport, except free Internets at the airport teamed up with the Star Wars Holiday Special. Not that I need Internet for it, because I downloaded it. About 10 minutes in I had to stop. I was ready to burst out laughing in the hardiest way. Wookie dialogue and actions have this comedic effect on me. Maybe because the Wookie scene is between a runt, an old timer, and a housewife. Watching and listening to the special with headphones on is an experience like no other, needing complete and total dedication.

I took my headphones off and I could still hear the circus music. A commercial in the background sounded startlingly like the SWHS tunes. Happy Life Day.

Recovery

After crashing like a fiend in need, the Star Wars Holiday Special still flashes in my mind and continues to puzzle me. However, I've been able to pull myself away from the void and continue to do things: laugh, love, smile, shower, etc.

I just watched the late 70s holiday Star Wars special and am now absolutely warped in the brain. I've waited a long time to watch this monstrosity and in no way could have imagined that this would be the result.

Let me give you an example. See the dude below, he has some weird volcano hair and a whole on top of it. As I watched I wondered what the heck was that all about? Then the barmaid, on the right (a.k.a. some lady from the Golden Girls), gave the dude a drink and he poured his cup of brew into his hair hole. This looked cheesy and fake- the pour lasted about a second. I imagine he had some fluid on his head so they could only film so much. Then the Golden Girl lady commenced to pour a pitcher of stuff into his head hole. Except you could tell the pitcher was empty and they added water flowing sounds to make it seem like there was some alcohol or something being poured into his mouth-head. If you haven't watched this then you are probably really confused, if you have seen this then you know that this isn't even the worst of it.

When I think of how the scene of the volcano head and the Golden Girl Tatooine barmaid was even presented in the first place I start to get the shakes and forget my name. A regular story contains a beginning, middle, and end. The bar scene I described doesn't fit into any of those categories. It's something that was put in there non sequitur. I can't say completely non sequitur; see some Storm Troopers were in Chewbacca's house and the Imperial Army had to send them an important information feed, so they used their home TV. And this important information was about Tatooine and that bar scene. It makes perfect sense when you don't think about it.

Ok, the title is meant to be deceiving. Today I traded in my physical CDs (what they would take) for instore credit at the local Vegas music shoppe. With that I bought the physical media which is still near and dear to me: blu-ray discs and vinyl. I was able to pick up the Criterion edition of Botttle Rocket , There Will Be Blood, and The Beach Boys' Endless Summer.

Bottle Rocket has been a favorite Wes Anderson film of mine for years and years. Prior to this full length film a 15 minutes short was done. I have yet to see it and have had a yearning for it for some 3-5 years. I've scourged forums and databases but never found it. Now it is available on the new Criterion edition... yay for me!

There Will Be Blood has added value now for 3 additional reasons. #1 : I've been reading "Oil!" (of which the movie is based) and have developed an even more profound interest in the characters, themes, motifs, settings, etc. #2: My netflix rental had a hairline crack in it and about half through it skipped a ton of scenes, now I own it and will guard against crackages. #3: Property, a good capitalist owns property.

Endless Summer- My buddy, BRR, will be happy for this one. I talked trash about The Beach Boys for some time, finding them to be repetitive and too Californian for me. Heck who was I kidding, they are awesome and I'm a Californian. Thanks to my girlfriend too for interesting me in all things Beach Boys.

So there you have it. I still have a bag full of CDs that they may buy later, so until then ... buy property, commodities, precious stones, and the like!

A Tale of Two Blogs

It may be or not be well known that I maintain two blogs. In theory this allows me to talk library and information shop as The LiS Kid and prattle on about nothing as Philippe for America. In practice it is mostly prattling on in both forums. For some, this may be a disturbance in their blog reading routines. Why should I have to check out two blogs for one dude? If you are the kind of person who favorites or remembers all the blogs you read then I am sorry. I am not sorry for my having two blogs, but am sorry because you don't use RSS. Don't go to the Internet and blogs, make them come to you. RSS is REALLY SIMPLE (haha get it? no, then learn about RSS). With RSS you can read my blogs and all the others you choose from the comfort of a single browser or reader program. In no time you'll be screaming, "I got 99 problems but a blog ain't one".

Magic Boy - UPDATE

The Magical Adventures of Magic Boy is a bit delayed due to my world travels, giving conferences on our hero and the future of the comic. Not too mention trying to collect my royalties from blogger has been a nightmare. However, my fair readers I hope that this little update can tide you over till the 2009 season. I present The Magic Boy Rogues Gallery:

The Sleeper - A robot whose looks are deceiving. The immense power that this skinny robot possesses hasn't been measured but it is able to crush concrete walls and pulverize steel. The Sleeper is also incredibly quick and agile.

Tiny Tim- He is an engineering genius and master conniver. Tiny Tim created The Sleeper and controls it for devious missions. Given his short stature and physical handicap Tiny Tim has sought to create works that overpowered and towered over others.

MotorMouth- Not much is known about the origins of this villain. His motorized mouth and vocal chords (or gears?) allow him to project sound waves that control all listeners, human and beast alike. MotorMouth doesn't have any arms and masks this deficit with a cape. While his physicality is limited it is no issue with his mind control powers.

Tragic Gal- This villainess features negative/opposite characteristics of Magic Boy. Her face is covered by a tragic mask. Her powers however are near identical to Magic Boys. Yet her purposes and motivations are tragically different.

Prussian Trumper- Looking to raise the Prussian empire and people the overly nostalgic Prussian Trumper is a parade of sorts. His mischief involves thwarting other Governments and rioting (by himself or otherwise). Mostly, he's a disturber of the peace but a wacky handful nonetheless.

There you have it, these Rogues look to make appearances throughout 2009. LET me know which villain looks the most enticing and maybe he or she will make a good number of appearances. I look to have a special Magical Boy ORIGIN issue out for December- keep an eye out!

Garbage Pail Kids

The last two days the sun had been shining bright and early. It was odd given the constant fog and coldness this time of year permits. This morning during my sunny trek to the light rail I happened upon a scene. A child was left by the dumpster. Economic times are hard but that is no reason to leave a hungry one to search for meager rations. I captured this moment for all history and leave it to my humble reader to contemplate over:

Upon noticing me the child threw her arms up in dispair and gave up searching, she was too short to reach into the dumpster. My options were to throw her in and let her forage in the safety of bags and trash or to give her a dollar to buy a cup of coffee. I decided to do nothing. Rather, I wanted to be an observer of life and I had to catch my train to work. I imagine a nice garbage man will pick her up and take her to a new home.

Life in Blu

I will stay away from technical details as much as possible and stay within the subjective experiences of multimedia quality.

Recently I picked up a blu ray player. This choice went against that which I had been a stalwart- the move to digital downloads/streams, Netflix only, and avoidance of the format war. So what made me crack? The realization that: not everything is available on digital stream and it will be awhile before that is even close, the need for Netflix purely for the physical format is overwhelming, streaming digital TrueHD movies won't be available for another 5-10 years (even then, new movies won't be available because of licensing and rights), and the reign of blu ray over HDdvd. While, HD streams are available (via my xbox 360 netflix) and look great- they are lacking; I notice the loss of data and notice slight pixelation. Also, many movies aren't available in HD. They are in lower quality streams, not unwatchable but there are some films that deserve a greater justice for viewing pleasure.

The REAL reason though is the Dark Knight. This movie is filmed and directed in an amazing way (see Wired article). I watched it last night and the viewing experience is hands down better than any movie I have seen on a television screen EVER. So I bought this for one movie? Not entirely, I bought Iron Man too and have Netflix. I probably won't buy other movies and will rely on Netflix. I already need it for digital streams so why not blu ray for the highest quality too?

The blu ray player also upgraded my DVDs. Unfortunately, the quality of DVDs on a digital LCD TV suffers under regular DVD players and xbox dvd player conversion rates. In short, a DVD can look better on an old analog television than a $1,000+ HDTV; unless you have an upconverting DVD player- as my blu ray player does. Tonight I watched Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith and compared the upconverted quality to the regular. On my LCD TV the difference was dramatic. Without upconversion: darker colors, quick movements, and color differences are pixelated, overall the resolution and quality is obviously lower. With upconversion images are clear and colors more vibrant. It isn't comparable to TrueHD but I'd say it is better than streaming HD on netflix. I've watched the Iron Man DVD and Lord of the Rings on different HDTVs and the drop in quality is loudly noticeable, hindering my enjoyment of the film. Luckily, upconversion has resolved that problem. I'm serious the unconverted difference makes me think of VHS quality.

As it stands, the Dark Knight is the one film I may only be able to watch on bluray/TrueHD or in the Imax theater - other formats would leave me gasping for air.

Excess Income

I almost spent my oil money on the 2nd appearance of Dr. Fate and the first time a comic book cover donned the blue and gold hero:

However, this was an original with a reprint of the cover (original cover torn off and probably pasted to some kids wall in the 1940s), making it relatively cheap but lame if I wanted to mount it and hold it in high regard. I didn't win the auction because spending over $200 on a reprint cover isn't worth it. One day I may own this issue, but will be content with a high quality reprint of the cover that is framed and mounted above my phonograph.

Now I have oil money for other things. It is either get a blu ray player on black friday or get a PS3 via $150 off (with a Sony credit card offer) - so that I may enjoy the glorious oil drive, in a classic for all time- There Will Be Blood.

My lady tells me that this movie is filled with shots of dirt, grime, Daniel Day-Lewis, and oil splashing around- a blu ray version will look great but you're not looking at something amazing like Iron Man, The Dark Knight, or a Wes Anderson film. Too true, but she understands that I'm an old timey kind of guy and the realism blu ray will bring into my humble home will make me wish tycoons still thrived and monopoly wasn't just a board game.

Gold with anger!

When I hear about werewolves, see collector spoons, see jewelry, or find a pre-1965 quarter - I think about silver. More importantly, how the world and The United States of America abandoned this classic precious metal- making it: A STANDARD NO MORE. That's right, silver is not an accepted monetary standard. However the horrible puke colored gold is the standard, nationally and globally.

WTF, does this mean... it means that gold is the only "monetary standard under which the basic unit of currency is equal in value to and exchangeable" (freedictionary.com). Our monies and printed currency is only worth as much as the gold that backs it. This makes me SO angry for several reasons. Silver is a great resource and looks dapper on my lapels, derby, and top hats! It should have never been abandoned. Imagine if the rest of the world abandoned the silver standard, but the US didn't - guess who has more money ... we do!

Also, the United States of America don't need no stinkin' gold! We have a standard called a massive and well trained army, an insane amount of war technology, the greatest Universities, baseball, and Barack Obama. Move over you ridiculous bullions - make way for reality!

Veteran's Day

My buddy Dan has a good post on our U.S. Holiday Veteran's Day and WWI. World War I has always been an anomaly to me. Comparable to other wars, men killing each other in brutal fashion; yet, it was fought by digging deep trenches, infested with rats and disease- then there's the mustard gas and gas masks. This war and it's battles must have been hell: dark and deep in the bowels of mud, earth, and bodies. Trees, vegetation, and life were decimated- leaving what was coined a "waste land". The terrain was unlike anything before and from what I can gather, unlike anything we have seen since. The atomic bombs are comparable but the damage and mayhem different.

Also, this "war to end all wars" lead to canonical works: T.S. Eliot's "The Waste Land" and "The Hollow Men", J.R.R. Tolkien's series "Lord of the Rings", and a slew of wartime poetry and dystopian novels. Lastly, not only should we remember the ideals for which our soldiers fought, but we should also ground ourselves in the reality of the events through which they struggled. With that, I leave you with a World War I classic.

Again two of my favorite authors Straczynski and Millar turned what could have been a ridiculous, contrived, and repeated plot into something exciting and fun. This is an e-mail sent to some pals.

I've had the unfortunate luck of finding a comic store that provides a buy 3 new titles get 1 free and monthly orders are 25% off. With that I'm looking for any titles ye may recommend.

- I read "Kick-Ass" by Mark Millar and enjoyed it immensely.
- I gave author Geoff Johns another try and read "Final Crisis: Legion of 3 Worlds", after getting sick of his JSA and Dr. Fate writings. He still sucks.
- I picked up "The Age of The Sentry" ... looked like a simple read, one shot deals, and maybe in the same vein as Batman Adventures. It's written like an early 1960's Marvel comic, complete with some humorous sexist material and critiques of that era. BUT it is no Batman Adventures, I don't see myself picking up issue #2.

I have yet to read some TPBs : SCUD is my gem that waits and Batman: DARK VICTORY by Loeb and Sales. I didn't like Batman: HUSH (even though it got rave reviews), but am giving Loeb another try. I picked up the hardcover Watching: The Watchmen by Gibbons? or the artist? Sketchbook and story notes .... haven't looked at it yet.

With that, I'm looking for great reads. I'm sick of paying $3-5 a title hoping for it to turn around on the next issue or so. J. Michael Straczynski is going to pick up "Brave and the Bold" soon, that will be a definite. Bendis is on a million titles and I'm not sure if that negatively effects his work. Lastly, I think I saw a preview for Punisher War Zone- and it looked killer.

This is the first installment of a segment we here on the mainland like to call: "What were they thinking!?"

A fierce nation in Africa but mostly South Africa are the Zulu. They battled their enemies with shield, spear, and speed. Their tactics in battle followed that of animals. For example they had a bull tactical charge that attacked head front but then spread around you like horns on a bull. Thereby forcing one to defend the front with a majority of troops only to end up surrounded. This worked well for them and for awhile, considering the millions of soldiers they had and the fact that all males were soldiers.

This brings us to breech loading rifles. Think of a musket, how one has to load gun powder into a tiny shaft, put a ball in there, and pack it- a timely process that lead to inaccurate shots and wastes of time and life. The breech loaded rifle used bullets that were locked and loaded into the rifle. During the late 19th century it was only one shot at a time, then refilling time. However, the speed in which one could load a bullet, aim, and fire was rapid and astonishing. A line of troops could command a volley of constant firing rates. Lastly, drastic improvements to aim and sight were managed thanks to bullets and breech loading designs.

Enter colonial England and their march through Africa. In the way were indigenous or autochthonous folk like the Zulu. Now, the Zulu did rock the Brits for a bit, after all they were a warrior driven culture of hundred of years and young and old men fought; they even got their mitts on rifles and pecked away. In the end, they were no match, it was dudes with spears and paper thin shields versus dudes with rifles, revolvers, and cannons.

Honestly, what were they thinking?!

Contemplating Comics

I'm thinking of writing a comic. One that is simple and just plain fun, mostly one-shot deals. Unveiled for the first time since I drew it in the hallway at work: The Magical Adventures of Magic Boy!

One such fan, graduate student Daniel Kaplan, has written his local representatives to save the team he loves and had this to say, "I love the Mets and they choked harder than any other team ever, it is only fair that America save us when we are down, I'm just glad the House turned down the first bill, it really gives us time to add some verbiage". Mets fans hope that The United States Congress can extend a "2008 wild-wild card" to the National League, providing a playoff spot for the Mets. The only question remains, who will they play?

There has been division between some fans. Select die-hards want the Mets to play whomever they can be set up with in the National League, while others are happy that they made the play-offs. Frank Griffiths of Queens states, "It's enough for me to say, well they made it to the playoffs, last year was real bad, but at least you know they made it this far, they don't need to play anyone, we can hold up our heads and say: "We are NL wild-wild card champions."."

Sir Francis Dude

A long time ago in a Catholic School far far a way I was in the 5th grade. It was has here that I learned of a Sir Francis Drake and his exploits of the 16th Century. I won't bore you with details and long-winded history findings. Rather, I leave you with a simple tale that captures the essence of this man and legend. I admit the story drags on in the middle parts and doesn't have a clear sense of direction, however the plot is solid and the character development is tops.

One For the Road

Before we step back into that time of simplicity I would like to point out that I love The Articles of Confederation. During Government class in high school our teacher used a "choose your own adventure" type computer program, projecting it onto the wall. The class made decisions by voting, in order to shape the newly free and self governing United States. We had the choice: revise the Articles of Confederation or start from scratch with a Constitution to debilitate States' rights, giving powers to a Union that resembled a "kingship". My championing paid off and the class voted wisely. Unfortunately the programmers were fools and it lead us into disarray and our hopes of a Utopian society failed.

Within this fantastic text the word "friendship" appears twice (zero appearances in the US Con.). It even included this interesting provision:

"Article XI. Canada acceding to this confederation, and adjoining in the measures of the United States, shall be admitted into, and entitled to all the advantages of this Union; but no other colony shall be admitted into the same, unless such admission be agreed to by nine States." No passport, no problem, welcome to Canada eh. The Montreal Expos might still be a team too.

The kicker, brilliant wording like this: "...unless such State be infested by pirates, in which case vessels of war may be fitted out for that occasion...". Whereas the US Con. dumbs it down to: "To define and punish Piracies and Felonies committed on the high Seas, and Offences against the Law of Nations;..." All in all the US Con. pales in comparison to the direct and avant-garde notions highlighted in our beginning freedoms.

Happy U.S. Constitution Day

Today we celebrate the antiquated document known as the U.S. Constitution. We've been able to put a lot of mileage on this piece of parchment, coasting us into the 2000s. Some though express their desire to rewrite this contemporary-obsolete mess that doesn't apply to our modern technology and progressive ideals. Moreover, we continue to argue over tattered paper with chicken scratch written hundreds of years ago by men in wigs and stalkings, wasting time and money deciding what it means or intends or how it should be construed. Lastly, we are governed by laws that were written by slave drivers and the true elitist of the time.

Prohibition

As I sit here listening to Al Jolson, having read Theodore Dreiser, and pontificating the faults in the Great Gatsby it gets me thinking about the experiment of U.S. Prohibition. A failed experiment but one that gave us tons of culture in which to appreciate: speakeasies, Fitzgerald novels, Eliot Ness, improved root beer, the American mobster, and more. People often confuse prohibition as a ban on the drinking of alcohol. However, alcohol consumption was nevered banned; it applied more so to the manufacturing and selling of alcohol. One could have made a load of cold ones before the amendment was ratified, thus having a store of liquor for consumption- but I digress. A huge amount of tax dollars and time was wasted in combating alcohol. Time and money that could have been better spent on education, labor rights, human rights, keeping Germany down so they couldn't raise an army for WWII, etc.

I've jumped from the Civil War and Reconstruction years to Prohibition and find myself heading too close to contemporary and modern societies. It's time to take some steps back and visit a time of simple pleasure and interesting notions. What is in store? You will have to check back and see!

Reconstruction

After the end of the war, Federal troops occupied Southern lands from 1855-1877. Attempting to establish order, rights to former slaves and African Americans, propone the Civil Rights Act of 1875, and thwart a resurgence of a Confederate army. This also allowed Carpetbaggers to take advantage of the war torn south. While they may have taken advantage they were investing in an area that needed all the help it could get. During that time African Americans and the South were on their way towards a semblance of repair and progress. However, Southern war wounds don't die quickly and as soon as Federal Troops left- Democrats came into power, enacted policy to discriminate and deny African Americans their rights (i.e. Grandfather Clauses). The Ku Klux Klan also came into great power once the troops left. The North being removed made room for hibernating hatred.

President Grant did well during his Reconstruction years until the Panic of 1873. A depression hits and the President always gets thrown to the wolves. That and he was rather ineffective in combating the economic turmoil. The economy was taking a nose dive and Republicans controlled the Capitol. The obvious move, Democrats were elected, leading to massive racism, segregation, murder, discrimation, and rape of our own people.

In short, our troops needed to occupy the South longer and retain order and peace. The defeated South effectively gained power of the U.S. Has the South been resonably healed of the massive racism, slavery, and war wounds of time past- or does the battle still rage on?

Welcome and Slavery

Welcome to my new blog. I have made some small attempts on my political prowess but this is the latest.This blog intends to serve a purpose of political insight and understanding that no other blog or historical text can provide. I would personally like to thank My Girl Friday for convincing me to start such an endeavor so as to enlighten the peoples of the world.

Topic 1. Slavery

We all know that slavery is a stain upon the earth and inhuman. It is one of the worst policies anyone can ever adopt and The U.S. is part and parcel to it. However, it is widely believed and accepted that Honest Abe Lincoln was a staunch abolitionist and did everything he could to end slavery. While he did end slavery, it wasn't his original goal or intention. The most important thing to our lanky president was preserving The Union. This meant allowing slavery and all it's provision to exist. Abe Lincoln was no states' rights kind of guy. After all, the Civil War is a result of his pro-union stance. Slavery luckily ended due to the war. It ended so as to cripple the South, changing their way of life and making them nothing but punk-ass-bitches without any economy, an economy that would pale in comparison to the North, teaching them a valuable lesson about succession. Lastly, do we honestly still think the Civil War was fought to end slavery? I am not even going to get into that one- but it WASN'T.
